Privacy policy

Nightfable is a place to read and write novels and fanfiction. We collect only what the site needs to work, we don't sell or share your data for advertising, and we don't use analytics or tracking tools. This page explains exactly what we keep and who can see it.
What we collect
Your account
- Email address and password. Your password is stored only as a secure hash; we can never see it.
- Username and display name that you choose. We never create them from your email address or your Google profile.
- Optional profile details: bio, profile picture, and links to FanFiction.net, AO3, Patreon or Discord.
What you post
- Your books, chapters, covers and chapter images, characters and tags.
- Comments, reviews, star ratings, votes, and likes or dislikes on comments and reviews.
- Reports you send about comments or reviews, including the reason you give.
Your reading activity
- Books in your library and how far you've read in each.
- Which books and chapters you've opened while signed in, used only to count views (each account counts a limited number of times).
- Who you follow, and your notifications.
Images you upload
Before a cover, profile picture or chapter image leaves your device, your browser redraws it and removes its hidden metadata — GPS location, camera details, the date it was taken and the original file name. (Animated GIFs are uploaded unchanged; GIFs don't carry location or camera data.)
What's public and what's private
Anyone can see:
- Your username, display name, bio, profile picture, profile links and chosen companion.
- Your published books and chapters, comments, reviews and the star rating attached to a review.
- Your Reader Stats: how many comments and reviews you've written, the likes and dislikes they received, and how many novels and fanfics you've bookmarked or started reading (totals only, never which ones).
- Who follows whom, and the companions you've unlocked.
Only you can see:
- Your email address.
- Which books are in your library and your reading progress.
- Which books and chapters you've viewed, your drafts, your notifications, and the reports you've sent.
Profile pictures you mark as NSFW are only shown to people browsing in NSFW mode.
Sign in with Google
If you choose “Continue with Google”, Google learns that you use Nightfable each time you sign in, and Nightfable appears among the connected apps in your Google Account. Google shares your email address, name and profile picture with us. We use only your email address; your Google name and picture are stored privately by our sign-in provider and are never shown on the site. If you'd rather Google not know you use Nightfable, sign up with email instead — ideally an address that isn't a Gmail, since your email provider can see the messages we send you.
Cookies and browser storage
We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. Your browser stores only:
- Sign-in cookies, so you stay signed in.
- Your SFW/NSFW choice (a cookie, so pages can hide mature books before they load).
- Your theme and reader settings (font, size, spacing and so on), kept in your browser's local storage.
Fonts are served from Nightfable itself, so loading a page doesn't contact any third party.
Who processes your data
- Supabase stores the database, sign-ins and uploaded images, in Ireland (EU). It also sends account emails such as confirmation and password reset links, and keeps sign-in logs (including IP addresses) for security.
- Vercel hosts the website, running in Dublin (EU), and keeps short-lived request logs (including IP addresses) for operating and securing the site.
- Google, only if you use Sign in with Google, as described above.
We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.
Emails
We only email you about your account (confirming your address, resetting your password). No newsletters or marketing.
Your rights
You can see and change most of your information yourself: edit your profile, books, comments and reviews, or delete them, and you can delete your whole account at any time under Settings. You can also ask us for a copy of your data or to correct it by emailing nightfable.support@gmail.com. If you're in the EU or UK, you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
When an account is deleted, its profile, books, comments, reviews, ratings, likes, library and reading history are deleted with it, along with the images it uploaded.
Age
You must be at least 16 to create an account. Mature, explicit and unrated books are only shown in NSFW mode, which you may only turn on if you're 18 or older.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
